How to make kava

Knead the root in water, strain it, share it. Five minutes and one bowl.

The three steps

Ground kava root being poured into a cotton strainer bag in a bowl of water

1. Measure and pour

About 1/2 teaspoon (1.5 g) of traditional grind per 1/2 cup of cool water. Put the powder in a straining cloth or mesh bag and set it in the bowl.

2. Knead for three minutes

Massage and squeeze the bag under the water until the water turns cloudy and tan. The kneading is what does the work.

3. Strain, stir, share

Wring the bag out, discard the spent root, stir, and pour. Best taken over a session rather than all at once.

Traditional grind kava is prepared by kneading the root powder in water and straining it. It takes about five minutes and one bowl. Here is the method we use.

What you need

  • Roots Jamaica traditional grind kava root powder
  • A straining cloth or fine mesh bag
  • A bowl and a cup
  • Room temperature or cool water

The method

  1. Measure. Start with about 1/2 teaspoon (roughly 1.5 g) of powder for each 1/2 cup of water. Place the powder in your straining cloth or mesh bag and set it in the bowl of water.
  2. Knead. Massage and squeeze the bag under the water for about three minutes. The water will turn cloudy and tan. Keep working the bag — the kneading is what extracts the root.
  3. Strain and serve. Wring the bag out fully and discard the spent root. Stir, pour, and serve. Drink it in a session over an hour or two rather than all at once.

Notes from practice

  • Cool water and a longer knead generally give a stronger, smoother cup than hot water and a fast one.
  • A short second wash of the same root will yield a lighter cup.
  • Kava separates as it sits. Stir before each pour.
  • Shake or stir well and drink it fairly quickly — most people find the taste easiest that way, often with a chaser of juice or fruit.

How much is in a bag
